Hoffa Buying Votes With Your Dues? This year's $100,000 Club raises serious questions about whether Hoffa is using members' dues to try to buy this fall's election. Last year, your dues paid $773,000 to two political consultants, Greg Tarpinian and Richard Leebove, both key Hoffa Campaign consultants. Hoffa doled out an incredible $8.4 million last year to 164 Teamster officials who already earn at least one other union salary. Multiple salaries have skyrocketed by 764 percent since Hoffa took office. These salaries function as a patronage system to officers who are expected to turn out the vote for Hoffa in return. Where’s The Power? Hoffa has allowed UPS to purchase Overnite and operate is as a giant SCAB operation to further drive down union wages and strengthen UPS management's hand in upcoming negotiations. Moreover, Hoffa uses "Teamster Power" not to fight for better contracts, but to force awful contracts down members' throats (ask Budweiser workers and Northwest Airlines' workers). His GO ALONG, GET ALONG approach to employers makes great use of an enormous PUBLIC RELATIONS budget. To Hoffa, "Teamster Power" means more power for the top officials, more $200,000 salaries for old guard pals and families, more backroom deals with employers, and more $ handed to anti-labor politicians.
Without Oversight? While Tom Leedham would expand Teamster democracy, Hoffa's top priority seems to be ending the consent decree . Hoffa is supporting right-wing , anti-labor politician Pete Hoekstra. WHY? To read the rest of the article, click here.
The Myth of Hoffa the Reformer Friday 22 July 2005, by Joe Allen OVER THE last several months, International Brotherhood of Teamsters General President James P. Hoffa has been described by the media as a union "reformer" or even "dissident." This extreme makeover for Hoffa has mostly to do the alliance he has made with Service Employees International Union (SEIU) President Andrew Stern against the faltering and besieged leadership of AFL-CIO President John Sweeney. |
